Liminal space relates to “the time between the ‘what was’ and the ‘next.’” (Three Levers, 2016.) Everyone goes through different liminal spaces in their life due to the different experiences we each live through. We sometimes end up in uncomfortable positions where we do not know how to push forward, but when we do push forward, we find ourselves even stronger than we were before, preparing us for the next challenge. “When we are facing major change, most of us, if we’re honest, don’t know who to become or how to navigate ahead.” (Three Levers, 2016.) This is relevant in every person’s life at some stage because change inevitably occurs whether we like it or not. A negative of the liminial space is that it can sometimes be hard to see how things will get better. Some people are stuck in this period longer than others but it essential for growth. A positive of the liminial space is that we end up being stronger than we were before and when new challenges arise, it is far easier to see the other side. My personal experience of the liminal space is leaving high school to do higher education studies at University. I went into architecture thinking that was what I wanted to do however when I realised I was not fulfilled by it, I was left in a liminial space as I had no navigation as to what to do next. I then found my way to teaching and am now completely fulfilled with what I am doing. I know without the challenges I faced in the liminial space, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
